Isaac Stern (1920-2001) was one of the most celebrated and influential violinists of the 20th century. His long and extensive performing career took him around the world and he remains one of the most recorded violinists in history. He was also a stalwart supporter of the arts in America; among his many distinguished posts Stern served as an originating member of the National Endowment for the Arts and as President of Carnegie Hall for more than thirty-five years.
