Single saleswoman Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) visits an employment agency in her lunch hour after receiving a week's notice of dismissal. When she leaves the agency, Polly notices that a small baby has been left on the steps of a foundling home. She takes the child to the authorities, but ends up looking after it herself. Everyone assumes that the child is Polly's, including David Merlin (David Niven), the playboy son of the store owner. David manages to save Polly's job, only to find himself falling in love with her.
