Benh Zeitlin co-writes and directs this Academy Award-nominated fantasy drama about a six-year-old girl struggling to survive in the flooded bayous of Louisiana. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her father Wink (Dwight Henry) live in 'the Bathtub', a poverty-stricken, semi-feral swamp area outside the protection of the New Orleans levee system. She sees herself as a 'little piece of a big, big universe' inhabiting a semi-magical world where everything is part of an interrelated, organic whole. With an absent mother, and her father sick, Hushpuppy's tenacious character and survival instincts are soon tested to the limits, when the onset of a colossal storm threatens to obliterate the unprotected community. With the waters rising, and determined to save the world she loves, Hushpuppy and her father take to the water in a makeshift boat fashioned from the back of an old pickup truck, in one last desperate effort to survive.
