In 1910 Englishman Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne) travels to Amiens, France, to stay at the family home of wealthy factory owner René Azaire (Laurent Lafitte). While there, he begins a passionate affair with René's young wife, Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), eventually convincing her to leave her abusive husband for him.
