Vittorio de Sica ('Bicycle Thieves') directs this Italian comedy drama about a man pushed to the limits in his efforts to rid himself of his growing debts. After living beyond his means to please his frivolous wife, Silvia (Gianna Maria Canale), Giovanni Alberti (Alberto Sordi) now finds himself in dire financial straits. With no other options available and desperate to hang onto his wife, he decides to accept the offer of cash, in exchange for one of his eyes, from the wife of a partially-sighted, rich industrialist.
