Bossa Nova began on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in 1958 when a group of musicians came together to create a new sound. Bossa Nova was a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music and rhythms combining the coolness of West Coast American jazz. At the centre of this explosion are two important figures: songwriters Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal who brought together Rio's finest exponents of Bossa Nova - Tom Jobim Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes.
