Waiting for a delayed flight at the airport, ad-executive Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) meets and swaps tickets with a fellow passenger named Greg (Tony Goldwyn), who is desperate to return home to his family in time for the Christmas holiday. When the plane crashes and Greg is killed, Buddy is unable to shake his sense of guilt and decides to visit Greg's widow Abby (Gwyneth Paltrow). The pair begin dating, but it is not until another passenger arrives in town, offering to show Abby some video footage taken just before the crash, that she realises Buddy had once known her husband.
