Brave DVD

Brave (PG) is Disney/Pixar's 2012 animation set in the Middle Ages in the Highlands of Scotland. The story's heroine is sixteen year old Princess Merida (voiceover by Kelly Macdonald) the daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson).

Merida stubbornly refuses to adopt the required ladylike demeanour expected of a Royal Princess, instead choosing to follow her own tomboyish style and free spirited inclination, which causes friction between her and her ever hopeful mother. She is a skilled archer, an accomplished rider and an expert sword fighter. When she hears that three Lords from neighbouring kingdoms are coming to present their sons to compete for her hand in marriage, she determines to opt out and devises a cunning plan which outwits everyone concerned. The events that follow, unexpectedly result in a strengthening of the (until now tenuous) mother-daughter bond.

This beautiful and enjoyable fairy tale is brought to the screen via some stunningly sensational animation. The storylines are amusing and highly original, the visuals are incredible and the dialogue is witty and cleverly arranged throughout. In short it is a charming magical mystery that is certain to appeal to many.
