Brothers tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal). Sam is a steadfast family man and Marine married to his high school sweetheart, Grace (Natalie Portman). Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who's always gotten by on wit and charm. When his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains Sam is presumed dead and the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void. Tommy tries to fill in for his brother and soon he finds himself falling for Grace, only to then find out the shocking news that Sam is still alive.
Jim Sheridan directs Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman in this remake of Susanne Bier's 2004 Danish drama. Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) is a decorated Marine who goes missing in action while on duty in Afghanistan. In his absence, his younger brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) - an ex-con drifter recently released from prison - attempts to support and comfort his bereft sister-in-law Grace (Portman) and her two daughters, with consequences that threaten to shake the foundations of the entire family.
