This seemingly simple premise - innocent woman (Kim Basinger) kidnapped and held with nothing but a broken telephone to while away the hours - was a surprising edge-of-your-seat race against time. Chris Evans plays the cool dude who disbelievingly answers his mobile 'phone to hear the traumatised hostage, in fear of her life and that of her family. The fast paced, action is interspersed with some truly antagonising moments, as Chris attempts to outwit Statham's villain. Considering the bargain bucket price of this film, I defy anyone to argue that this is anything but amazing value for money. Avoid the bad weather and curl up with Chris or Kim (or both - the choice is yours !)for less than the price of a cinema ticket !
Kim Basinger plays a teacher in this film. She is married to a lawyer and has one son. On a 'normal' day she gets kidnapped from her home and, afer being locked up, tries to fix the broken phone(slightly unlikely, but without this minor point there would be no story) to enable her to call for help.
Cris Evans (Not to be confused with the red haired man from btittish radio/tv) is a carefree young man who is enjoying the younger years of his life which includes chasing girls and fooling arround.
Whilst running an errant for an ex-girlfriend he recieves a call, it is jessica (kim B) who pleads with him for help.
He finally agrees to help her but soon gets entangled in the situation. This entanglemant leads im to break the law on several ocasions, get shot at and risk his life on several occasions.
The plot is well constructed and the actors make easy work of it all. Some twist in the story and nice action stunts and viusuals complete the package.
This good Action Thriller should appeal to both sexes and is excellent friday night viewing.
Easily mistaken for the latest advertisement of Nokia, The fast paced action thriller Cellular, given its chance, can certainly be worthy of a watch. Featuring a star studded cast such as Kim Basinger, William Macy and the cockney charmer himself, Jason Statham the film features everything needed for a roller coaster ride â€" car chases, gun battles, tension, twists, crooked cops and even a few moments of comedy.
Taking the lead roles are Basinger and Hollywood's latest teen heart throb Chris Evans ("not another teen movie"). Jessica Martin (Basinger) is kidnapped and locked in an attic with only a smashed up phone. After managing to connect some wires she manages to call a complete stranger - Ricky (Evans). After convincing him she's been kidnapped the film follows his struggle to not only keep the line going but also save Jessica and her family from the twisted mess of corruption which sees Statham in his familiar gangster like role. After a dubious beginning this is where the film really comes into its own. Packing a lot of thrills into a short space it manages to keep the level of tension consistently high.
Although the film is never going to break through the mould with cinematic originality it is still going to entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat. A mixture of Speed, Phonebooth and Enemy of the State the film is certainly worth a watch.
Brilliant movie. MUST WATCH. Some have compared this to Phonebooth. NO. This is much better & so much more full of suspense.
Acting GREAT both by Chris Evans (new to me) & Kim Basinger. I also liked the fact that there was no any unnessary swearing which often spoils a good movie for me.
DO BUY or rent this movie.
