As news of the German surrender spread 8th May was declared Victory in Europe or VE-Day. Crowds took to the streets but the celebrations did not have the same hysterical joy as had greeted the end of the First World War. The second had gone on for longer and caused far greater world-wide death and destruction. It was the culmination of six years of bloody warfare which had devastated the continent and killed tens of millions of people and witnessed the true horror of the Nazi's Final Solution.
