Charles Mingus was one of the greatest bassists and composers of jazz. His music incorporated many influences including gospel blues classical latin and many styles of jazz. He pioneered melodic bass playing in jazz. Early in his career Mingus wrote in classical notation but by the mid-1950's dictated parts to his musicians verbally or played them on the bass or piano giving them the freedom to express their own musical personality.
