Set in 19th century Korea, this is the story of Jang Seung-Up (Choi Min-Sik), a renowned Korean painter. As a child, Jang is taken in by Kim Byung-Moon (Ahn Sung-Ki), who recognises the boy's artistic potential and becomes his mentor. In pursuit of 'true art', Jang stretches the limits of traditional Korean art, and tries to find artistic transcendence by plunging into a life of drugs and women.
