The most delicious event since macaroni met cheese. Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.
When you think of CGI animated movies these days, you can't help but think of Pixar and the dominance they have had with movies such as the 'Toy Story' series, 'Finding Nemo' and many others. There is no doubt that for sheer consistancy, Pixar deserve all the plaudits. But of course this doesn't mean that other animated movies aren't worth a look. Every so often, something comes along and takes us all by surprise. I remember seeing 'Shrek' for the first time and thinking it was far more charming and entertaining than it had any right to be. The same can be said for 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.'
For a start, don't let the name put you off. I do believe it's more likely to confuse people than entice them into seeing the movie, but I guarantee it's a hidden gem. Adapted from a book by Ron and Judi Barrett, 'Cloudy' is a visual treat that serves up unexpected laughs and tears all in one crazy story. I won't give away all of the voice actors, but it's practically a game of 'spot the voice' from start to finish, including some very surprising yet instantly recogniseable cameos.
Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), a likeable and enthusiastic inventor, lives in Swallow Falls and wants nothing more than to fix the food problems of the town. As you can imagine from the title of the movie, his scientific experiments end up making the weather and food combine to form very interesting results. Flint, along with weather intern Samantha Sparks (Anna Faris), explore the possibilities of his actions. At first it seems like a fun idea, but soon the real implications unravel.
This is a movie for kids and adults alike. As crazy as it is heartwarming, there's jokes that appeal on every level. Flint is a character you want to follow and see what he does next, and his relationship and banter with Samantha makes for some laugh out loud moments. And while it may not quite hit the heights of any Pixar movie, Sony have done a fantastic job of hitting the spot with this quirky script. It has just the right mix of creative animation and witty writing to make it a success.
I don't want to give away too much as I really feel I enjoyed it because I had no real idea of what it was going to be about. 'Cloudy' is a tasty treat that any animation fan will crack a smile at. I hope to get the chance to see it in 3D one day, but the movie works just fine in 2D. Definitely one of the sleeper hits of 2010 for DVD.
