Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected,... takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh [show more]

The outrageously funny comedy hit inspired by the true story of Jamaica's first Olympic bobsled team. They were four unlikely athletes with one impossible dream. Now, with the help of an ex-champion as their coach (John Candy), Derice, Sanka, Junior and Yul leave their sunny island home and enter the chilly winter Olympics to compete for the gold in a sport they know nothing about - bobsled racing!
Based on a real scenario at the 1988 Olympics, this comedy focuses on the trials and tribulations of the first ever Jamaican bob-sled team and their coach (John Candy). Derice Bannock is due to qualify for Jamaica's track team but due to an accident his hopes are dashed. He finds out that a gold-medallist lives in Jamaica, former US resident and bob-sled champion Irv Blitzer (Candy) and persuades him to coach a team for entry into the 1988 Olympics. However, the team Bannock puts together has never sat in a bob-sled let alone seen snow.
