India 1954 and Anglo-Indian relations are very tense. In the troubled Macintosh household things get worse when Lily (Greta Scacchi) gives birth to a very ill baby girl. Cotton Mary (Madhur Jaffrey), a local Anglo-Indian hospital aide who claims her father was a British Officer, decides to look after the baby in order to help the long suffering Lily, whose family soon invite Mary to do more work for them playing on Lily's illness. However, Mary is more concerned about what happens when Lily regains her strength and control over the family again.
