Alan Dobie stars as Detective Sergeant Cribb a member of Scotland Yard's newly formed CID unit in Victorian London. Known for his wry sense of humour Cribb is aided and at times hindered by the ever-faithful Constable Thackeray...
This is a quirky series, not huge budget, but seriously entertaining. The hero is a Victorian police sergeant, a wily detective who is hampered by his well-connected but rather dim superior Inspector Jowett, and aided by his burly and put-upon Constable, Thackeray. The real beauty of these stories is the atmosphere and the detail of Victorian life, the prize fights and the prostitutes, the gaslight and the fog. This is not a mere Sherlock Holmes clone; Cribb is a vibrant individual, a character who takes on a real life of his own, and the mysteries he solves are intriguing to the last. Worth watching.
