Whilst the Royal Air Force concentrated on bombing Germany by night the US airforce carried out a dangerous strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany during daylight hours. On every raid some bombers suffered damage exploding in mid air falling from the sky in pieces or in tears of flames. Operating from airfields in rural England the Flying Fortress and Liberator Bombers of the Eighth Air Force escorted by Thunderbolt and Mustang fighters learnt a hard lesson in the skies over Europe.
