Dirk Gently DVD

| DVD

Created by one of Britain's most exciting screenwriting talents, Howard Overman (Misfits) and based on the books by Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently is a dramatic, witty and intelligent series with plots that delight, surprise, but ultimately satisfy. With two characters at the heart of each story that you just want to spend time with, brilliantly portrayed by Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd, the series also boasts a sensational cast of regulars returning from the pilot - Helen Baxendale as Macduff's girlfriend Susan, Jason Watkins as Det. Insp Gilks with Lisa Jackson returning... as the unpaid, unloved and quite deeply disturbed receptionist Janice Pearce across the series.Stephen Mangan stars as Douglas Adams' self-styled Holistic Detective, Dirk Gently. Perennially broke and morally dubious, Dirk's methods are based on 'The Fundamental Interconnectedness of All Things'. Darren Boyd stars as Dirk's business partner, Richard Macduff, who attempts to rein in Dirk's more tangential decisions, keep them both out of prison and generally restore order to the chaos that Dirk creates. The pilot episode features Dirk's attempts to solve the disappearance of a billionaire inventor, taking in quantum mechanics, unrequited love and an old lady's missing cat. In Episode 1 of this new three-part series, Dirk discovers the connection between two unrelated cases; a client who believes the Pentagon are trying to kill him and another who's horoscopes appear to be coming true. In Episode 2 Dirk is called back to his old university to protect a valuable robot but within 24 hours it has been stolen and a dead body discovered, with Dirk & Macduff the prime suspect. In Episode 3 they are alarmed to discover that Dirk's old clients are being randomly murdered with Dirk as the only link. Rather than talk to the police, Dirk elects to leave the country but is waylaid by a series of seemingly unconnected events. [show more]

Dirk Gently, Douglas Adams' perennially broke, morally dubious Holistic Detective, whose investigations are based on the "Fundamental Interconnectedness of All Things" is finally brought to television in BBC4's hit series. Created by Howard Overman (Misfits) and starring Stephen Mangan (Episodes, Green Wing) as Dirk, and Darren Boyd (Spy, Whites) as his put-upon business partner Richard MacDuff, these four stories take in a missing cat, a stolen robot, horoscopes that actually predict the future and a Pentagon plot to destroy the Free World. And while solving these cases, Dirk must stay one step ahead of MacDuff's sceptical girlfriend Susan (Helen Baxendale--Cold Feet, Friends), harassed Detective Inspector Gilks (Jason Watkins--Trollied) and his own unpaid, unappreciated assistant Janice (Lisa Jackson--Campus), all while escaping the attentions of the Taxman and framing a man for murder. Based on the much-loved books by Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy), Dirk Gently is written by Howard Overman, Jamie Mathieson (Being Human) and Matt Jones (Doctor Who, Skins). Part genius, part conman, mostly tangential, Dirk Gently is a detective like no other. Includes all three new episodes, plus the pilot episode.

The complete comedy drama mini-series starring Stephen Mangan as Dirk Gently, the detective created by Douglas Adams. Believing all events to be linked, Gently uses a holistic approach in his investigations which often results in his methods being criticised. The series follows the sleuth as he attempts to uncover the truth behind various murders until he finds himself the main suspect in a series of killings. Helen Baxendale, Jason Watkins and Lisa Jackson co-star with Darren Boyd playing Gently's sidekick, Richard Macduff.
