The story of Jules (Andrei) an opera-obsessed courier whose bootleg recording of a rare concert by American diva Cynthia Hawkins (Wiggins-Fernandez) is believed to be a tape connecting the chief of police with a Parisian vice ring precipitates a frantic search for its whereabouts by two murderous thugs (Pinon and Gerard Darmon).

This French thriller is the directorial debut of Jean-Jacques Beineix. Jules (Frédéric Andréi) is a Parisian mail courier in possession of two highly sought-after tapes: the first contains a rare recording of American opera singer Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez), with whom he has fallen in love; the second is a tape slipped into his bag by a young woman just before she is murdered. The unwitting Jules thus finds himself being pursued by Taiwanese bootleggers and a thuggish gang of drug dealers who will do anything to get their hands on the cassettes.

DIVA stars Frederic Andrei as Jules, a young Parisian messenger who is obsessed with a beautiful American opera singer who refuses to make recording of her performances. Determined to capture her voice on tape, Jules manages to make an excellent recording of her which is promptly stolen from him and replaced with a tape that incriminates a French politician, causing Jules to become of a pair of French hitmen. Featuring a quirky sense of humor, enormous visual style, wonderful music, and an unforgettable subway motorcycle chase scene, DIVA is among the best and most influential films of the 1980s.
