The Southern Railway had one of Britain's most interesting fleets of steam locomotives a collection of antique machines from three former railway companies. Added to that mix were the country's most distinctive modern express engines. Many of these engines survive in preservation some of them still working at speed on the mainline. More than a dozen are profiled in this unique modern compilation a ""road test"" carried out by the very drivers and firemen who worked on them in the steam era. The smallest are the diminutive tank engines - including the 'Terriers'... - that survived on branch lines nearly a hundred years after they were built. The largest are the Bulleid express machines some of which still haul trains at 75 miles an hour. This is life on the footplate at its most graphic. [show more]
