In the failing gold town of Crown City, Sam Brannon works hard to maintain peace between the local populace and the neighbouring Ute tribe of Native Americans. However, the Ute's mineral rich territory has become the region's only remaining exploitable resource, and local crook Frank Walker is determined to gain control of the land. To this end, he tries to force a confrontation with the Native Americans that will, he hopes, see them driven from their homes. Brannon's son, Gary, has been consumed with hate for the Ute tribe ever since one of their number killed his mother, a hatred Walker exploits to dupe him into assisting with his scheme.
