Malti (Meena Kumari) and Amar (Sunil Dutt) both are orphans and are happily married to each other with a loving child Raja. Amar works for Prakash (Ashok Kumar) a bachelor and a very genuine human being who becomes their close family friend. One day Amar catches Bihari (Jeevan) and his accomplice red handed while trying to cheat the company and he has them taken to task. They in turn decide to avenge their humiliation. Amar is murdered leaving Malti and Raja bereft. Prakash is sympathetic towards them for their great loss and tries to help Malti start afresh. But Bihari... incites the neighbours in the locality who torment and accuse Malti of having illicit relations with Prakash. To save Malti's honour Prakash marries her but it is difficult to make little Raja come to terms with his father's demise and accept Prakash in this role. Bihari further provokes Raja into believing that Prakash is responsible for his father's death. Through this struggle both Malti and Prakash try to make little Raja come around but to no avail. Relenting under all the pressure and Raja's rebellion Prakash decides to leave them. Will Prakash leave his family? Will Raja finally accept Prakash? Ek Hi Rasta was the first movie independently produced by B.R.Chopra under his own banner B.R.Films. It covered the bold subject of widow remarriage which won it wide accolades.
