Jack Lowden stars as Steven Patrick Morrissey in this biographical drama about the English singer's early life in Manchester in the 1970s before he formed The Smiths. The film follows the young Morrissey as he works in an office for Inland Revenue while at the same time keenly noting down any lyrics and poetry that happen to come to him. But before becoming the enigmatic and iconic frontman of a seminal British band, Morrissey is racked with social anxiety despite being confident in his own abilities and convinced he is destined for greatness. He struggles to find his big break before meeting fellow artist Linder Sterling (Jessica Brown Findlay) and becoming involved in the Manchester punk scene. The pair grows close and he takes inspiration from her before ultimately forming his songwriting partnership with Johnny Marr (Laurie Kynaston).
