A 17th century romantic adventure starring Linda Darnell as Amber, the amorous courtesan who is able to conquer any man - except the one she really wants. She is left alone to bear the child of Bruce Carlton, a gallant adventurer whom she desperately loves. Determined to win him by gaining stature and title, the calculating Amber has an affair with a captain, marries a wealthy Earl and even becomes mistress to the King - all in the hope that Bruce wil return. Directed by Otto Preminger, the Los Angeles Times' reviewer described its reproduction of the Restoration as 'lavish and beautiful'.
