PRESERVED LINES SWANAGE: The Swanage Railway offers a more intensive heritage steam and diesel train service than virtually any other preserved railway operating every day of the week between April and October. This picturesque line travels through the stunning Purbeck countryside between Norden and the seaside town of Swanage in Dorset. Now you too can enjoy the wonderfully preserved Swanage line with this nostalgic look at one of Britain s most loved lines. SUPER POWER BRITISH PACIFICS: One of the few positives to come out of the gloom of the inter-war years in Britain... was the emergence of a new breed of powerful steam locomotives. First built by Sir Nigel Gresley these 4-6-2 Pacifics represented the very pinnacle of express passenger locomotives across the networks. Gresley s A3 Class produced the impressive Flying Scotsman, now something of a household name. Their sleek, streamlined design and prodigious performances were enough to ensure the survival of their iconic status into the 21st Century. SETTLE & CARLISLE: The Settle & Carlisle Railway soars across the Pennines on lofty Settle & Carlisle viaducts with a mystique unrivalled by any other railway. Today its grandeur recreates the railways greatest days when steam was king. Steam locomotives from the mighty Mallard and the world famous Flying Scotsman, Duchess of Hamilton and Evening Star to the humble Black 5s still thunder through the mountains and tunnels, over Ribblehead, through Kirkby Stephen and Langwathby, from Settle to Carlisle and back. Join us in the sights and sounds of hard working steam that relieve for you Steam in Britain on the Settle and Carlisle. STANDARD CLASS 4 TANKS: The subjects of this Steam Classics are some of the popular mixed traffic British Railways Standard Class 4 2-6-4 tank engines built in the mid 1950s. They were part of a 155-strong class of go anywhere locomotives which were the final development of a type which can trace it origins back through LMS designs to its early days. A number of them have survived into the preservation era and are operated over both Railtrack and private lines today. This programme concentrates on the three which have worked on the main lines in the 1990s, numbers 80079, 80080 and 80098. [show more]
