There are few literary genres that have a larger and more loyal audience than romance novels; it's been estimated that every four seconds, someone in the world buys a novel from the American publisher Harlequin or the British counterpart Hills & Boon, and the women who are their most loyal customers eagerly read book after book, even though most follow rigorously similar plot lines. Filmmaker Julie Moggan offers an entertaining look into the world of romance literature -- the people who read it and those who help produce it -- in the documentary Guilty Pleasures. Roger Sanderson is a successful romance author (and one of the few men in the field) who is a frequent guest at conventions for aspiring writers, where he passes along his secrets for success in the trade. Stephen Muzzonigro is a male model who has found a lucrative specialty posing for the covers of romance novels; despite being the physical ideal for many women, he admits he's had little luck with relationships and says his busy career has gotten in the way of finding love. And Shirley Davies, Hiroko Honmo and Shumita Didi Singh are three fans who talk about their favorite authors and why they love romance novels; as it happens, Shirley and Hiroko are married but have discovered reality isn't as much fun as books, while Shumita is separated from an unfaithful and inconsiderate husband. Age Rating 12
