Christian Bale delivers another powerful performance as disturbed, mildly psychotic, 'war on terror' veteran Jim David, in writer/director David 'Training Day' Ayer"s bleak, brutal but brilliant L.A. set drama. Jim and best friend Mike, an unemployed IT worker played with aplomb by Freddy Rodriguez, spend their days driving around South Central, meeting shady characters, drinking and scoring weed when they should be looking for work. 'Harsh Times' is in the same vein as returning veteran stories like 'The Best Days Of Our Lives' or 'Taxi Driver' whilst taking in the full blowback of what institutional dehumanisation can do to an ordinary, even talented, man like Jim. Some will recall that similar themes were last explored in another excellent, L.A. based thriller: 'Falling Down', and in many ways, 'Harsh Times' is a modern day companion piece to that film: An engrossing, fast paced character study with a poignant anti-war message, clarified in the devastating final act; when Bale"s fate serves to answer a question posed by Rodriquez earlier in the film. Nothing less than a modern classic.

Crime drama starring Christian Bale. Jim Davis (Bale) is an ex-Army Ranger who finds himself slipping back into his old life of petty crime after a job offer from the LAPD evaporates. His best friend (Freddy Rodriguez) is pressured by his girlfriend Sylvia (Eva Longoria) to find a job, but Jim is more interested in hanging out and making cash from small heists, while trying to get a law enforcement job so he can marry his Mexican girlfriend.
Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 (Europe) or region Free DVD Player in order to play Haunted by nightmares from his murderous military past, the honourably discharged Jim spends his time between his impoverished fiancee in rural Mexico and cruising the streets of east L.A., knocking back beers and smoking joints with his buddy Mike. Meanwhile, Homeland Security wants to recruit Jim for some special ops in Central America, but first he has to pass a urine test.
