The story itself starts at the Foundling Hospital our heroine Hetty Feather is abandoned as a baby at the hospital, but gets fostered until age 5 by her kind-hearted foster parents. who live in a big house with other foundlings and the couple s own children. However when a circus moves into town, our feisty Hetty sneaks off to see the show. Hetty is mesmerized by what she sees but has to soon return to the Foundling Hospital to begin her schooling. She misses her friends, especially Jem who has promised to marry her when she comes of age, but Hetty now has the chance to find her real mother. Will she find her in the circus?

Isabel Clifton stars in the title role of this TV adaptation based on the children's book by Jacqueline Wilson set in Victorian London. Having been abandoned as a baby at the Foundling Hospital, Hetty Feather has been fostered by a kind couple. But after turning five-years-old she is forced to return to the hospital to begin her education. But young Hetty detests the strict regime and longs to leave the institution in search of her birth mother who she suspects may be a part of the town's visiting circus.
