Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd) is successful lawyer who leads a comfortable life in San Francisco with her husband Tom (Jim Caviezel). But when a seemingly random burglary attempt takes place at her house, it leads to the revelation that Tom is in fact Ronald Chapman, a soldier accused of killing nine villagers in El Salvador in the late 1980s. With her world in tatters, Claire joins forces with disgraced army lawyer Charlie Grimes (Morgan Freeman) and resolves to defend 'Tom' herself, even if it means confronting an extensive military cover-up operation.
