After running away from her sexually-abusive father, teenager Charleen (Christine Tremarco) teams up with road protestor Declan (Stuart Sinclair Blyth). When Declan's camp is attacked by the police, he and Charleen go on the run with Killer, a rescued pitbull, and are given a lift by Vera (Sheila Hancock), who is driving to the Orkney Islands in her van. The trio gradually forge a close friendship, revealing secrets from their past as they learn to trust each other: Charleen tells how she intends to rescue her mentally handicapped sister from their father's clutches, while Vera confesses that she is dying from cancer, and wants to be buried near her lesbian lover in Orkney.
