Blake Washburn blames manufacturer MacFarland for his defeat in the race for re-election to the state legislature. He takes over his uncles newspaper to take on big business as an enemy of the people. Miss Martin (Marilyn Monroe) works in the Herald newspaper office. When tragedy strikes Blake must re-examine his views.

Classic Hollywood drama featuring an early performance from Marilyn Monroe. Blake Washburn (Jeffrey Lynn) is a local politician embittered when he fails to get re-elected and who blames corporate interests for his fall from grace. He sets about getting his revenge via a job writing a column in his uncle's newspaper, exposing the undemocratic machinations of big business. But when his sister Iris (Marilyn Monroe) is trapped underground in a cave-in, it is one of the big businesses he has railed against that comes to her aid, throwing him into a moral dilemma.
