Despite promising his mother on her deathbed that he would never marry, Jack Singer (Nicolas Cage) agrees to wed his girlfriend Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker) in Las Vegas. However, once there he falls into a rigged gambling situation and loses her in a poker game to a high roller (James Caan) who thinks she is the spitting image of his dead wife. When Jack then realises that the game was a con, he forgets all about his anti-nuptial neuroses and sets out to win back the woman he loves.
