Walter Matthau plays a CIA man who disappears and begins mailing his memoirs, chapter by chapter, to intelligence agencies throughout the world, helped by an old lover and former spy (Glenda Jackson). He exposes espionage secrets as revenge for his demotion to a desk job and the powers that be decide he must be stopped.

A fired CIA agent decides to get even with the organization by publishing a book which outlines years of dirty secrets. As a result of his actions, both the CIA and the KGB decide to do their best to prevent him from furthering his literary career.
