Will Smith stars as Robert Neville in this Boxing Day release about the last living man on Earth. But he soon finds that he is not alone. Just how long can one man survive in a world full of vampires?
Here is a very notorious and individual film, directed by Francis Lawrence, written by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman and based on matheson's novel of the same name - this film will always be in my top 5 greatest films of all time.
Will smith plays Dr Robert Neville, a very smart and widely known doctor. When the country is under threat from a circulating virus which mutates human beings making them into the living dead, the whole United States evacuates to other places of the world but Dr Robert Neville stays behind. Leaving his wife and son, Dr Neville, with only his dog to keep him company, tries to make a medicine that can reverse the virus and stop the crisis getting even bigger.
In case there are any other survivors, Neville broadcasts on the radio every day saying that when the sun reaches his peak, he will be on the bridge. Then later on you meet some survivors who join Neville in finding the remedy for the virus.
This heart throbbing story will make you cry and jump in your seat; it's a great combination and would be widely enjoyed by many people in many generations as it has something for everyone. All in all I strongly recommend this title, you'll be hooked! Overall I give this 8.5 out of 10.
I think I should start with the good things about this Will Smith vehicle, because, to be frank, there are very little. For one thing, the shots of deserted Manhattan are awe inspiring. Wonderful use of colour and light create a really palpable sense of loneliness and menace. Will Smith is excellent and is perfect to carry a more or less one man film. These are the reasons the film has just made it into the "OK" bracket. From this point onward, I will find fault with it.
The film gets dull. Once you've seen the mutant humans, the frights go out the window. They start to look ridiculous. The computer animation is also very dodgy, causing unintentional moments of hilarity. From the cartoon-like deer running through deserted Manhattan to the screaming animals in cages the whole thing starts to look like a Dreamworks movie. Speaking of Dreamworks, there seems to be a rather strange interest in the movie Shrek, including some imitations of Donkey. This could be to introduce some humanity to the situations, as if saying "these are real people who watch Shrek just like you" but it comes across as out of place and more than a little weird. The plotting structure seems erratic, badly constructed and tiresome. You start to wonder if the film maker's story boards got put up in the wrong order.
Although I seem to be slating this movie to kingdom come, I would like to say that it still managed to entertain rather well, for all it's gaping plot holes. Will Smith is also a leading man that deserves some attention. Even if he is quoting Shrek.
While not highly critically acclaimed on general release at the cinema, this solid horror/thriller title is well worth the money and a good addition to anybodies DVD collection. I first watched it on my laptop on the Hull-Rotterdam ferry...watching this film from a windowless 'coffin' is not to be recommended. Definitely lights on, curtains open.
Action starts with Dr Robert Neville (Will Smith) evacuating his family from Manhattan, as the supposed cancer-cure is starting to take hold on the population. Action then switches to 3 years later and a post-apocalyptic vision of New York unfolds. Is Neville the only man left alive? Can a vaccine to reverse the awful effects of the first vaccine be found? Is it healthy to eat canned food that long out of date? You'll have to watch to find out.
Top-notch CGI and a fast pace will keep you on the edge of your seat, along with Will Smith's excellent & believable performance.
Could any other actor really have managed to carry this role off in quite the same way as Will Smith ? Ok so he's probably really playing a variation of himself ~ but what's wrong with that when it works so well.
So the film is full of eye popping CGI, gory SFX and amway sentimentalism ~ it is also clever & funny in it's depication of the situation, captures well the sheer isolation of the man and rare for me these days ~ managed to surprise when really least expected.
Overall a good film well worth seeing more than once.
Robert Neville is trapped all alone in New York City... but his he??? He spends his days preparing for the nights actions and trying to cure a terrible virus which turns everybody into a vampire! It is a great movie to watch and doesn't disapoint all the way through. It keeps you on the edge of your seat... will he die or will he save man-kind? It might not be a movie which you can watch over and over again but for the first viewing it certainly is one of the best movies for a while... so go ahead and buy it NOW!!!
A remake of the Charlton Heston movie Omega man ,somewhat different to the fact that they don't speak this time, the movie was ok but the ending spoils it.
