Drama set in Russia in the aftermath of the Second World War. In the winter of 1946, a group of German prisoners of war is sent to a women's transit camp in Leningrad run by the merciless Pavlov (John Malkovich). The female soldiers responsible for the day-to-day running of the camp, having been ordered to weed out the SS officers among the German soldiers, initially treat them with cruelty and disdain, unable to forget the atrocities committed against their loved ones by their long-time enemy. An exception is Natalia (Vera Farmiga), a doctor who responds humanely to the traumatised young Germans. As time passes, however, unlikely bonds begin to develop between members of the two disparate groups.
