Having set out to make a version of rock music thats a step apart from the norm, its perhaps no surprise that Incubus Volume 2 should be such a groundbreaking release. Clocking in at two-and-a-half hours, the package is spectacular value for money. The combination of live, video and documentary footage may not be new, but the presentation is remarkably original. Filmed over a period of two years, this captures a band in development, honing their unique mix of metal, hip-hop and more cultural influences. The live material is intense, the videos visionary and the interviews... proof that Brandon Boyd and co are a cut above your average brainless rock outfit--as indeed is this release. On the DVD: for once heres a release that utilises the true potential of the DVD format. Its a truly interactive experience, inviting the viewer to explore the material on offer, as opposed to just pressing play and sitting back. This means its possible to return to the disc over and over again without stumbling across the same sections twice. An Incubus slot machine throws up random sections and its easy to become lost in the music as you move from acoustic tracks to a comedy performance on US TV. A massive song index ties the whole thing together and the result is a music DVD that sets a new standard for others to follow. --Phil Udell [show more]
