Tim Pigott-Smith stars in this British drama directed by Rupert Goold. Adapted from Mike Bartlett's play, the film follows Prince Charles (Pigott-Smith) as he becomes the new king following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. In his first task as monarch Charles is presented with a controversial new bill which is awaiting his royal assent before it can become law. However, doubting the bill's validity, Charles refuses to sign and parliament is thrown into disarray as a result. Now facing a political crisis and mass protests across the country, Charles is forced to act quickly in a desperate attempt to save his stuttering reign. The cast also includes Charlotte Riley, Oliver Chris and Adam James.

But after the Queen’s death he finds himself wrestling his conscience over a bill to sign into law. His hesitation detonates a constitutional and political crisis and divides his family, with William and Kate realising his actions may threaten their future.Meanwhile an unhappy Prince Harry starts a relationship with a commoner, just when the press is looking to attack…With the Monarchy's future under threat, protests on the streets and his family in disarray, Charles must grapple with his identity and purpose, to decide whether the Crown still has any real power.
