Two cell mates in a South American prison are wildly different men. Luis is a trans individual who is found guilty of immoral behavior and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. However, during the time they spend together, the two men come to understand and respect one another more than they ever knew they could.

William Hurt and Raul Julia star as prisoners in this drama. Luis Molina (Hurt), a homosexual arrested for immoral behaviour, and political activist Valentin Arregui (Julia), a Marxist writer, find themselves as cellmates in a Brazilian prison during the rule of the country's military government. To pass the time, Luis acts out scenes from his favourite films and Valentin reminisces on a past affair with a wealthy woman. The prison officials are hoping to use Luis to get information out of the dissident writer, while Valentin attempts to engineer his own release.
