Two years have passed since series three. 2016 Christmas Special of the BBC drama starring Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid as an ageing man and woman who rediscover the feelings they once had for each other. Widowed 70-somethings Alan Buttershaw (Jacobi) and Celia Dawson (Reid) became reacquainted after their respective grandsons created Facebook accounts for them and rekindled the love they shared almost 60 years previous. In this instalment, Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) prepares to host her family on Christmas Day but, with all the recent changes in her life, the pressure soon gets to her. She's about to start work at a challenging school in Huddersfield and has just moved her unhappy family to a run-down farmhouse. Meanwhile, she is also convinced that her new house is haunted and decides to hold a séance to put her own and Gillian (Nicola Walker)'s mind to rest.
