What girl wouldn't want to enter into Jane Austen's world and meet Mr Darcy? Amanda does this just this through her bathroom and stumbles into the Regency world of Pride & Prejudice. While it takes a while to warm up to Amanda (Gemma Arterton), she brilliantly takes us through life in the Bennett household. We are given the opportunity to live vicariously through Amanda, meeting our well known Pride & Prejudice characters. Darcy is just as dreamy as we would hope, and it's easy to wish we were in Amanda's shoes. A treat to watch any time.

A delightful four-part mini series which puts a spin on the classic story of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) is a modern day girl who is a keen fan of Austen's book, Pride & Prejudice. One night, whilst curled up reading the book, she discovers Elizabeth Bennett in her bathroom. Elizabeth shows her the secret door to her world, which Amanda ventures into, discovering the world of Pride & Prejudice, whilst Elizabeth is left in modern day London.
We follow Amanda's journey, which commences at the beginning of the novel, as she meets all the characters from the book, including the handsome Mr Darcy.

The reception of the show all depends upon the individual. Many Austen fans will despise the story, whilst others will enjoy every minute of it. Whether the story ends meeting your expectations remains to be seen. However, one thing everyone will agree on is the excellent writing.
Rooper is a strong lead, with the audience finding it easy to identify with her, and Hugh Bonneville is a wonderful Mr Bennett, who truly captures the essence of the character.

The DVD itself is nothing extraordinary. The four episodes plus a behind the scenes making-of featurette, split onto two DVDs. Fans of the show will notice the absence of a few moments from the TV series missing from the DVD, in which our protagonist, Amanda Price, sings Downtown to her hosts. Another element is the they have changed her mobile phone ringtone, which was originally the theme tune to the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice. The DVD itself does state in the small print that "certain scenes in this DVD version have been edited or deleted for copyright reasons". Although it doesn't really affect the storyline in any shape or form, it may however anger the most devout fans of the show.

Overall, a surprisingly enjoyable outing by ITV, which will leave all viewers wishing they could have had the same opportunity as Amanda, and travel into the world of Pride & Prejudice.

Four part series. Starring Alex Kingston (ER), Jemima Rooper (As If, The Black Dalhia)

Gently humorous four-part drama series loosely based on Jane Austen's classic novel, 'Pride and Prejudice'. Jemima Rooper plays Amanda Price, a 21st century Jane Austen fan who is shocked when she discovers 'Pride and Prejudice' character, Elizabeth Bennet (Gemma Arterton), in her bathroom. Elizabeth leads Amanda through a hidden doorway and suddenly she finds herself trapped in the 'real' fictional world of 'Pride and Prejudice'. While Elizabeth is more than happy to live Amanda's life, Amanda must make sure that in Elizabeth's world the events of the novel unfold in the correct manner.
