After Chester 'Ace' Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) is released from prison, he starts mixing with his long-time friend and driver Gus (Debbis Farina). Ace soon discovers that Gus has become the owner of a promising racehorse called Pint of Plain and gets him into the world of horse racing. Ace starts to make plans about how he can get hold of the racetrack while planning revenge against those he blames for his incarceration. Despite LUCK being renewed for a second series, the production was cancelled during the first series after three horses died. This release presents all the episodes released in seires 1.

As part of his plan to get revenge on those he holds accountable for his jail sentencing, Ace looks to take over the Santa Anita racetrack in Los Angeles where he wants to incorporate casino gambling. Meanwhile, a group of gamblers, including poker addict Jerry Boyle (Jason Gedrick), aim to win big on a 'pick six' bet. Elsewhere, agent Joey Rathburn (Richard Kind) schemes in order to find a way for his client, Ronnie Jenkins (Gary Stevens), to ride trainer Walter Smith (Nick Nolte)'s promising horse, Gettn'up Morning. A rivalry soon sparks up between Ronnie and young female jockey Rosie (Kerry Condon) who has been helping to train the horse and is also eager to race with him.
