At New York's Central Park Zoo a lion (Stiller) a zebra (Rock) a giraffe (Schwimmer) and a hippo (Pinkett Smith) are best friends and stars of the show. But when one of the animals goes missing from their cage the other three break free to look for him only to find themselves reunited... on a ship en route to Africa. When their vessel is hijacked however the friends who have all been raised in captivity learn first-hand what life can be like in the wild.

When a group of pampered Central Park Zoo animals find themselves transported to the wild, they find that their easy life in captivity hasn't prepared them in the slightest for the real world. Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) are star attractions at the Central Park Zoo in New York. When they find themselves mixed up in an attempted zoo-break by the cunning penguins, the keepers decide that the animals are restless and return them to the wild. On the island of Madagascar, the animals are having a hard time adjusting, but when they meet eccentric King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen), they start to find life a bit easier, even if Alex the Lion is gradually reverting to his more primal instincts. Also included is the short animated film 'Penguin Christmas Mission', featuring the Madagascar penguins. When the newest penguin recruit notices that the Polar Bear is all alone on Christmas Eve, he gets caught up in a whirlwind adventure around the city, and it's up to the rest of the penguins to get him back.
