John MacKenzie directs this drama starring Carol White as Valerie, a working single mother, and singer-songwriter Roy Harper as aspiring pop star Mike Preston. Valerie is wooed by three men in her community - idealistic Mike, who writes a song about her, local priest Father Dyson (John Castle) who abuses his power to get closer to her, and Madhav (Sam Dastor), an Indian, university-educated immigrant who is Valerie's boss at the switchboard where she works.
