This drama based around the true story of a young man with severe facial deformities won Cher her first best actress oscar nomination - and deservedly so.The story, though could have turned into soppy rubbish, is treated realistically by Bogdanovich and, because of the harsh mother of the young boy performed expertly by Cher in an intense and complex portrayal, this film excells in the field of 'made for tv movie', and set the standard for the ones to come. With excellent support from eric stoltz, Sam Elliot and Laura Dern, 'Mask' is an unsentimental but heartbreaking tribute to anyone who has ever been different, but not given up, and fought against it.
