When a New York heart surgeon has a mild heart-attack he is encouraged by his girlfriend to visit Los Angeles to reconcile his relationship with his father. Once there, he discovers his father is terminally ill and so begins their adventure to do all the things they had never done together.
Bittersweet comedy co-written and co-produced by Billy Crystal, who also stars as New York heart surgeon Dr Abbie Polin. After suffering a mild heart attack, Abbie decides to resume contact with his long-estranged father Abe (Alan King), known in Hollywood as 'King of the Extras'. Abbie's efforts at reconciliation meet with an ambivalent reception from his father, who is allergic to any form of responsibility or commitment, and prefers to remain the 'face in the crowd' that his job requires. But Abbie is more similar to his father than he'll admit, particularly when it comes to his non-commital relationship with long-suffering girlfriend Lisa (JoBeth Williams), and as the two men banter and rail against one another, they begin to grow close despite themselves.
