Tilo (Aishwarya Rai), an immigrant from India, runs a spice shop in Oakland, California. While she supplies the ingredients for curries and kormas, she also helps her customers to gain a more precious commodity: whatever they most desire. However, when she suddenly falls in love with a fine American man, her powers begin to wane and leave her with a difficult choice.... Acclaimed director Gurinder Chadha co-wrote the screenplay of this romantic drama with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges, adapting the script from the novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.

Aishwarya Rai stars in this magical romantic drama. Tilo (Rai) is an Indian immigrant who opens a spice shop in California and gives advice to her customers on their cooking. But she is also a mythical 'Mistress of Spices', who can help people achieve their deepest desires by a careful mix of the right spices. But when she begins to fall in love, she starts to find the rules that govern her actions restrictive, and prepares to let human nature take its own course.
