When a retired army general is too old to respond to an order to help quell a rebel uprising his main concern is for the shame it will bring on his family. Aware of her father's anxiety Mu Lan decides to enlist in the army disguising herself as a man. A dab hand at martial arts Mu Lan is no pushover having been a disciple of Master Zi Hou for many years. Throughout the war Mu Lan fights courageously alongside her closest friend Liu eventually rising to the rank of Commander. However when the war is over will she be able to part from Liu or will she reveal her secret?
