Nick Arden (Cary Grant) has his wife Ellen (Irene Dunne) declared legally dead after she has been missing for seven years, in order to marry his new love, Bianca (Gail Patrick). When Ellen, who has been shipwrecked all this time, returns to find her erstwhile husband has remarried, she sets out to get him back by making him jealous over Stephen (Randolph Scott), the man with whom she was shipwrecked.
