A double bill of family adventures. In 'Nim's Island' (2008), Nim Rusoe (Abigail Breslin) lives on an uncharted tropical island with her marine scientist father, Jack (Gerard Butler), and her best friends, Fred the lizard, Galileo the pelican, and Selki the seal. When Jack departs for a day of research on the ocean, Nim begins an unlikely e-mail correspondence with Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster), an agoraphobic novelist who lives in New York City. Alexandra is under the impression she's communicating with Nim's dad and Nim thinks she's writing to Alex Rover, the hero of Alexandra's books. When a huge storm hits the island, preventing Jack from returning, the novelist begins to realise that her cyber correspondent is not a scientist, but a little girl who is alone and in danger. Alexandra decides to confront her fears and leave the safety of her townhouse to go and rescue her young friend. In the sequel 'Return to Nim's Island' (2013), after Nim (Bindi Irwin) and her father Jack (Matthew Lillard) learn that a resort company has bought the island for development, Jack heads off to Brisbane to try and make them see sense. Meanwhile, back on the island Nim discovers that poachers are at work and enlists the help of runaway city boy Edmund (Toby Wallace) to help her protect the threatened animals.
